My dad began making wood products during the depression years of the 1930’s, with clean plain lines. He was particularly good at making signs, frames, small furniture pieces and toys. As a craftsman, people would marvel at the pieces he would produce for family and friends as gifts during the Christmas season and he began making limited custom items for other people. Although this was a passion, he would only do this “on the side” while working a full time job as well as, up to 3 additional part time jobs as a master die maker to support his wife and 4 boys. His attention to detail, creative abilities and vision made him a once in a generation type craftsman.
He passed away in 1989 but I always kept his vision of our Farmhouse Wood in my heart as well as my head while adding some of my own personal touches over the years that make it a collaboration between myself and my dad that I think he would be proud of.
Within our family we had a farm in Hyannis that was active up until the 1950’s when my Grand Uncle passed away. Then the farm became our summer sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of living in the city of Boston until the late 1990’s, where we would see uncles, aunts and cousins all summer long. As kids, we would spend days at the beach down the street from the house and evenings sitting in quiet enjoyment of each other’s company playing cards and drinking tea with my Grand Mother Annie and Grand Aunt Mary.
It was there on the farm around 1965 that my dad taught me about his passion and vision while planting the seed in my head for future development. We would explore the barn and the grounds of the farm for “interesting” wood and ideas. Finding wood that others would throw into the fire, he taught me how to see something different about the character of the wood and it’s potential for something special; what he and I would later refer to Farmhouse Wood. Over the years, I would make things and couldn’t wait to show him.
We make items that remind us of simpler times with a touch of nostalgia that brings a smile. I also believe that feeling is something that sustains us and is needed now more than ever. Our Farmhouse Wood Products have a vintage feel with a practical purpose and make a perfect addition to your home or a gift for someone you care for. Today, you can get a piece of our family in every product we make and no two pieces are identical. We’re proud of the work and products we make and hope you enjoy our passion for the character of the wood.
My hope is that you will love what we have made as much as I love designing and making it for you. That’s what Farmhouse Wood Products is all about.
Thank you very much for supporting our small business.
